Senate Democrats: VTGOP Sen. Douglass Must Resign for Participating in Racist Republican Group Chat

MONTPELIER —  A Politico report released today reveals that Vermont Senator Sam Douglass and his spouse Brianna Douglass participated in a private Young Republican chat rife with racist, bigoted and hateful remarks—with their direct quotes explicitly targeting Jewish and Indian people. The transcripts of the larger conversation they participated in include praise of Hitler, threats of rape, and slurs against multiple minority communities. Our democracy — built on dignity and respect — depends on our refusal to accept racism, bigotry and hatred in any form.

There is absolutely no place for such disturbing and dangerous rhetoric. Sam Douglass's actions are incompatible with public service and the sacred institution of the Vermont Senate. I call on Senator Sam Douglass to resign immediately.

I respect Governor Phil Scott for condemning Senator Douglass' actions earlier today and his call for Senator Douglass to resign immediately. I hope that the Governor will give consideration to appointing someone to replace Senator Douglass who can help our state heal from this moment.

• An unequivocal public apology to all targeted communities.
• A transparent commitment to restitution and accountability.

Formal condemnation from the Vermont GOP and the State Senate Republican caucus, with disciplinary action against anyone who defends or tolerates such conduct.

To the many Vermonters reaching out in shock and outrage: I stand with you. This is not politics. It is morality.
