Vermont Democratic Party statement on Donald Trump's "Billionaires First" budget

, on
MONTPELIER – In response to U.S. House Republicans passing Donald Trump's disastrous budget bill, Vermont Democratic Party Chair Jim Ramsey released the following statement:

"House Republicans passed a budget that includes the largest cuts to health care and food assistance in American history — showing once more that the GOP's priority will always be Trump's billionaire backers, not working families.

"On Trump's orders, they voted to rip away quality, affordable health care from over 168,000 Vermonters who rely on Medicaid, including rural residents, older adults, and people with disabilities. They're also targeting food assistance that helps more than 66,000 Vermonters, including children and seniors, put meals on the table."

"Trump's 'billionaires first' budget is a dangerous attack on our rural hospitals, on caregivers, and on every family doing their best to make ends meet. It will cost hardworking Vermonters their jobs and leave families across our state footing the bill — all so Republicans can hand out more tax breaks to billionaires.

"Vermont Democrats are grateful to Congresswoman Balint for voting against this disastrous budget in the House, and to Senators Welch and Sanders for standing strong in opposition as it heads to the Senate. Thank you for fighting to protect the programs that help Vermonters live with dignity, care for their families, and thrive in every corner of our state."
