Seeking an experienced attorney with excellent management and prosecutorial skills who can effectively lead the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s office. The ideal candidate will ensure that the office meets its commitment to all residents of the County and supports the development of the next generation of attorneys practicing in the public arena.
Responsibilities of the State’s Attorney will include:
- Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the office, hiring, supervising, and evaluating all staff, establishing the office structure, communicating clearly, and reinforcing team values, in addition to handling a caseload. Representing and growing your caseload (particularly complex cases) to enhance your legal skills and expertise.
- Ensuring that the workplace is free of any form of discrimination, harassment, violation of law or policy while respecting individuality and diversity.
- Demonstrating expertise in hiring deputy state’s attorneys, victim advocates, and investigators who work together effectively and collaboratively to achieve the goals of the Strategic Plan.
- Providing training, mentoring and supervision that reinforces a reputation of excellence for the Franklin County office.
- Setting clear expectations for an office culture of legal excellence, fairness, and consistency, and holding self and staff accountable.
- Providing leadership to and establishing direction for the Franklin County office, in collaboration with key community and state partners, to articulate the County’s vision of Justice and Public Safety and realize it in accordance with best practices.
- Demonstrating accountability to the Franklin County Community through transparent communication that includes public access to written office policies and information regarding Brady letters and collecting and making public data regarding charging decisions, pre-trial recommendations, plea bargains, sentencing recommendations, as well as CHINS and Delinquency petitions filed, dismissed, and cases closed due to family reunification, adoption or aging out.

Applicants must include:
- JD degree and admission to the Vermont Bar or a candidate who has successfully passed the Vermont Bar exam by reading the law in Vermont.
- At least 5 years’ experience as an attorney.
- Active member of the state bar and local bar associations.
- Prosecutorial experience including significant trial experience, knowledge, and expertise in the field of criminal law and procedure, particularly in the area of prosecution, and ability and willingness to work with law enforcement, defense bar, the Judiciary and DCF/Family Services staff.
- Knowledge of and experience in the work of addressing domestic violence, sexual violence, and substance use disorders, and individual, family and community impact.
- Knowledge of and experience in the culture of the Abenaki Band of the Missisquoi and the intergenerational impact of the legal and social services system.
- Physical and mental stamina for dealing with extremely large caseloads.
- Knowledge of and experience in the cultural and economic diversity and unique needs of Franklin County.
- Honesty, fairness, and compassion, as well as willingness to listen to office staff, victims and families, colleagues, other counsel, and members of the community.
- Understanding of the needs of office staff and employees and ability to effectively empower, motivate, and communicate.
- Capacity to set boundaries and make clear and timely decisions.
- Modeling and reinforcing VDP Principles (equity, prosperity for all, environmental justice, health care for all, justice and community safety, public education second to none and democracy in policies and practices).
